Close on the heels of Uber cab rape case in Delhi, the app-based taxi company is introducing an in-app panic button for its riders in India. It will be an added safeguard for the riders who wish to notify the police in case of an emergency.
Additionally, the company will also be concentrating on its ‘safety net’ feature. The feature can be used by the riders to share their trip details with up to 5 friends and family members, according to the company’s blog post.
Uber was banned from operating in India, after a woman alleged of rape by a Uber driver.
Whether this service will be exclusively available for Indian passengers or will it be made available elsewhere is still not clear.
Physical panic buttons not possible
Transport officials in India had asked the company to install physical panic buttons, but Uber was not okay with the suggestion, given that it may result into logistical issues. Besides, there are increased chances of wear and tear and also mechanical malfunctions. So it’s extremely difficult to keep them in a working condition across all the cars in the city, Uber further added in its blog post. However, the in-app will work with just a push of a button.
