Microsoft Acquires Calendar App Sunrise to Cut Out Competition

Microsoft seems to be on a makeover mode. And acquiring startups that are directly competing with its own products, seems to be part of its makeover strategy. The latest acquisition being the calendar app maker ‘Sunrise’. For this deal, Microsoft reportedly coughed up $100 million, Tech Crunch reported.

Sunrise’s calendar app can be set in your desktop browsers, iPhones, iPads and even Android devices. And, more importantly, it’s pulls information from Microsoft’s Exchange, Google’s Calendar and Apple’s iCloud. The app has received rave reviews for its clean design, not to mention, its ability to organize scheduling information from multiple sources. The app also serves as your personal digital assistant, as it is programmed to offer information based on user’s location.

One can access the calendar from Google, iCloud and Microsoft Exchange and also from third-party apps. Being a cross-device and cross-platform support, calendar app has said to have gained significant traction among users.

Microsoft, for sometime now, has been supporting rival technology firms. Just recently, the company created ripples in the tech world, with the launch of its touch-friendly version of Office for Apple iOS, even before it did for its own Window platform.

Last heard, Microsoft would prefer to keep the app alive. Having said that, it may add some of its technology for its own calendar software in Microsoft Outlook.

The software giant did something similar last year when it acquired Acompli – an email organization software – by adding its tech into its recently launched versions of Outlook on mobile devices.
