Snap Chat’s ‘Discover’ to Rock Facebook News Boat

Snapchat’s new news feature Discover will ensure that users get only high-quality, editorially-curated news. And not just any random news, filtered by friendly ‘likes,’ ‘comments,’ and ‘shares.’

In Facebook, there’s every possibility that a hard-hitting news gets buried under dozens of other news, if it does not get the required push through ‘likes,’ ‘shares’ and ‘comments.’ In fact, a cute looking baby video will be leading news of the day, thanks to Facebook’s social media friendly algorithms. (After all, it’s a social media site.)

This won’t be the case with Discover.

Discover for one, will only display news stories and videos that are curated by a trained editor, who knows what’s news and what’s not. In fact, when you tap and swipe around the Discover page, you will find only stories from big-time media outlets such as National Geographic, Comedy Central, ESPN and CNN. Blizzards, snowstorms, terrorists attacks and tsunami news will all find their rightful place on Discover… and not get buried under heaps of garbage.

No doubt, the content appearing on Discover will be similar to that of the Facebook page. For instance, the content liked by your friends will appear next to the news links shared by your friends and by publishers you follow on discover. However, unlike Facebook, that lets algorithm of ‘likes and shares’ determine what content users see, Discover will adopt an anti-algorithm stance with regard to content. It will even have ads.

So, here’s a good news for news organizations. No more content pandering to please the traffic-hose monster Facebook. No more click-baity headlines. No more fluffy viral videos. Publishers can now, focus on the quality of the content exclusively.

Isn’t news supposed to be a serious business after all.

We don’t like to prick brains. But a comment doesn’t either.

So, what’s your take on this news?
