If Facebook has its way, even low-end smartphone users and emerging markets will have unhindered internet access. Facebook Lite – Facebook’s new standalone app – is being specifically designed to browse on 2G networks and in places where connectivity is extremely limited.
The new app – a version of its Android app – will be initially tested in emerging markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. That said, the company is only interested in taking baby steps for now, as it may cancel the project if it is not yielding the desired results.
As smartphone sales increases by the day, the company wants to offers seamless experience to both high and low-end categories.
In fact, India’s mobile Facebook users will surpass the U.S. user base by 2017. Today, India has 112 million Facebook users, which is second largest after the U.S.,of which 99 million users use it on their mobile phones, at least once in a month. About 45 million Indians use mobile to connect with their Facebook friends daily.
