Unlocking a smartphone doesn’t come easily to many, especially if there are punch numbers and drawing patterns involved. So, to make unlocking a little easier, even fingerprints and facial recognition have been tried and tested in the past. Now ZTE Corporation, a Chinese telecommunications company thinks that it can take it a notch higher.
The company’s ZTC Grand S3 smartphone will be set up with a feature called “Sky Eye.” The feature helps you swap Android’s lockscreen with your eyeballs. In fact, it uses a biometric authentication called “Eyeprint ID” by EyeVerify.
This is how it will operate: Open the locked Grand S3 by tapping the power button. Then swipe the screen, from top-down. A spot for eye recognition will appear. Thereafter, you will receive prompts, as in whether you need to move in closer or further away from the mobile for scanning. Once you have moved in the desired range, a green line will appear on the screen and you have to follow it with your eyes for at least eight seconds. The front-facing camera will record the blood vessels in your eyes and create a secure ID. In theory, you just need to do it once, that is, you do not have to repeat the process again. Once, the system identifies your eyes unique characteristics, it gives you access to the rest of the Android.
As of now, the ZTE Grand S3 is being sold only in online stores in China. And, it’s priced at 3000 yuan ($480). The mobile will be put on sale in other parts of the world sometime this year.
