Twitter Trying Out TV Timelines

Twitter is currently experimenting with TV timelines. And, if the experiment succeeds, you can see American Idol and other selective TV shows live on Twitter. You won’t just see it, but you can even tweet about it, and also share GIFs and photos. Three columns — Highlights, Media and All — will help organize all the conversation and visual content related to a show.

However, the service is still in its testing stage and only limited iPhone app users are able to use it. A hashtag for a particular TV show has to be used for viewing the video. Currently, the TV shows that are viewable on Twitter are American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, @Midnight and The Blacklist.

Currently, there’s no show that’s exclusively designed for the TV Timelines view. However, it might in the future. A recent study by Nielsen India suggests that TV viewers enjoy TV more when social media is involved. As in while watching the live TV, they use the social media to engage, react and discuss.

Going forward, it will be really interesting to see how Twitter will take this feature forward and how TV channels will use it in real-time.
