Twitter is Tracking the Apps You Use

Though privacy on the internet has become more of a farce nowadays, the latest dent in it is made by your own lovable Twitter. According to Twitter’s post on its support blog about the ‘App Graph’, which what they are calling it, Twitter will now be collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device.

The silver lining to the new development is – Twitter will not be looking into what you do on the app, it would just keep a note of the apps you use. While Twitter says it is for a more customized experience, the users obviously read it as targeted ads.

If you are already not aware, Twitter is not the first one to do it. Facebook already has all the data when it comes to apps developed with developer’s kit and we all know how Facebook uses the data.

We as users of any platform understand that it takes money to keep up and running such a huge platform with millions of users simultaneously. Ads are the most logical and efficient way to earn money. Watching an occasional ad on our timeline or twitter feed doesn’t irritate us that much. What really irks us, is the pretext the companies give when breaching into our privacy.

Twitter claims, To help build a more personal Twitter experience for you, we are collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that you might be interested in.

The point that defies this policy being pro-us is – it is an opt-out feature instead of opt-in. Twitter will only give you a notification when it starts and if you ignore it, you are opted in the App Graph by default.

In the near future, we can expect a customized Uber offer or The Local Starbucks specials on our Twitter feed in the coming days and it will go on to be more personalized every coming day.

Thankfully, there is a way out of it and it has been suggested by the social networking giant itself.
