Yes, it’s that time of the year where all your wishes come true! But only if you are ready to stumble, fall and punch your way through to your favourite gadgets. It’s a treat for those who made a wise move to hold on to their “old” smartphone, ironically bought just last year, for the all new fall models that are finally available and are smarter than ever. From big screens to bigger batteries to new-age specs, this season’s smartphone harvest has something for everyone and a Black Friday makes it even better.
Here are our picks for the top smartphones for the 2014 holiday:
Good: Droid Turbo ($199 with a 2-year contract for 32GB)
Verizon and Motorola teamed up to craft a device that addressed the key censure about today’s smartphones: battery life. Enter the Droid Turbo. Even though its 48-hour claim is found to be an exaggeration, the Turbo still keeps buzzing long after other phones started begging for charger — all while staying nice and trim at just 6 ounces.
It features a 5.2-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) display, a whopping 21-megapixel camera and the totally off the wall — but undeniably convenient — photo sharing with nearby friends just by “zapping” them with two fingers. This season, it offers a great package for the standard $199 contract price. Throw in another $50 and get 64GB total storage and the mesmerising ballistic nylon exterior.
Better: iPhone 6 Plus ($299 with a 2-year contract for 16GB)
It was a mixed feeling during the launch of the Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone, the iPhone 6 Plus. Two months and millions of units later, we know: It’s an exceptional smartphone. It offers a fabulous experience— including iOS 8, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, Apple Pay and a phablet sized full HD display. Add to that a camera with the feature of optical image stabilization and you arguably have the best iPhone ever made.
Best: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge ($399 or $429 with a 2-year contract for 32GB)
Want something extra special this season? There’s nothing quite like the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge which is a 5.7-inch phablet with a secondary vertical display curved around one side. Yea, you heard that right. The display permits an easy access to favorite apps, news headlines, Twitter topics and much more. If you are missing the modern-day clock-radio on your bedside, then the edge panel can even turn the phone into one by continuously displaying the time at night.
Even without its signature accoutrement, Galaxy Edge is a flagship phone of Samsung. The souped-up camera (complete with optical image stabilization), ultra-sharp Quad HD display and a speedy processor, make the Edge a top-notch smartphone. But its resourceful edge panel puts it over the top.
Grab yours!
