The eagle found on some U.S. currency (silver dollars issued from 1836 to 1839) is modeled after an actual eagle that nested at the Philadelphia Mint in the early 19th century. Mint employees named him Peter, and upon his death, he was stuffed—he’s still on display at the Mint.
